Parliament: Composition of the National Assembly
Article 50 establishes that Parliament (Majlis-e-Shoora) consists of the President and two Houses โ the National Assembly and the Senate, making it a bicameral legislature.
- National Assembly (Lower House): Directly elected by the people through adult franchise (Article 51).
- Senate (Upper House): Provides equal representation to all provinces, indirectly elected.
- Duration: The term of the National Assembly is 5 years, as provided in Article 52.
- Total strength: The National Assembly currently has 336 seats (266 general + 60 women + 10 non-Muslim), per Article 51.
- Provincial allocation (general seats): Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan are allocated seats on the basis of population, with Balochistan and the Federal Capital having the smallest shares and Punjab the largest.
- Women's reserved seats: Allocated province-wise (e.g., Sindh has 14 reserved women's seats).
- Federal Capital: Islamabad Capital Territory has 3 general seats in the National Assembly.
- Minimum age for membership: A candidate must be at least 25 years old (Article 62 read with Article 51).
- Election method: Members of the National Assembly's general seats are elected through direct elections.
