Theft & Extortion
- s.378 โ Theft: Its elements are intention and dishonesty (dishonest removal of movable property from another's possession, without consent).
- Punishment for theft in a dwelling house: Imprisonment up to 7 years, plus fine.
- s.381-A: Special provision for theft of motor vehicle, tubewell, or transformer.
- s.383 โ Extortion: Intentionally putting a person in fear of injury and thereby dishonestly inducing delivery of property, valuable security, or anything that may be converted into valuable security.
- Punishment for extortion (s.384): Imprisonment up to 3 years.
- Extortion by putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt (s.386): Enhanced punishment.
- Chapter XVII of PPC contains 11 major offences against property.
- Illustration: Finding a necklace in someone else's house (still in their constructive possession) and dishonestly removing it = theft; similarly, cutting and taking another's tree without permission is theft.
