Sources of Modern Jurisprudence are broadly divided as follows:

- Legal sources: Legislation, Precedent, Juristic Opinion, Customs

- Historical sources

Sub-classification:

• Legislation: Supreme Legislation, Sub-ordinate Legislation
• Precedent: Authoritative, Persuasive
• Customs: Legal (further: Local, General), Conventional

According to Salmond, sources of law were classified by Salmond and Keeton.
