Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)
ECOSOC was established under the UN Charter as the principal organ coordinating economic, social, and related work of 14 specialized agencies, functional commissions, and 5 regional commissions.
- Members: 54, elected by the General Assembly.
- Headquarters: New York City. Term of members: 3 years.
- Basis of seats: The 54 seats are allocated on the basis of geographical representation.
- Voting: One vote per member; decisions by majority of members present and voting.
- Objectives/Functions: Serve as the central forum for discussion of international economic and social issues; promote higher living standards, full employment, and economic & social progress โ all of these; identify solutions to international economic, social, and health problems; encourage universal respect for human fundamental rights.
- Coordinating role: ECOSOC is the organ responsible for coordinating the work of the UN's specialized agencies.
