Principal Organs of the UN - Overview
The United Nations has six principal organs, all established in 1945 under the UN Charter.
- The Six Organs: General Assembly, Security Council, Secretariat, Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Trusteeship Council, and the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
- Total number of principal organs: Six (6).
- Not a principal organ: The World Trade Organization (WTO) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are not principal organs of the UN โ they are separate international bodies/specialized agencies.
- Each organ has its own composition, headquarters, functions, and voting rules, but together they form the constitutional structure of the UN under Article 7 of the Charter.
