Security Council - Non-Permanent Members & Rule 83
Under Rule 83 of the Rules of Procedure, the 10 non-permanent seats of the Security Council are allocated by regional distribution.
- Voting requirement: Selection of non-permanent members requires a 2/3rd majority.
- Regional allocation:
- African and Asian States: 5 seats.
- Eastern European States: 1 seat.
- Latin American States: 2 seats.
- (The remaining 2 seats go to Western European and Other States.)
- This regional formula ensures geographically balanced representation on the Council among the 10 non-permanent members elected by the General Assembly for 2-year terms.
